Life or death hanging by a mouse click (or) The most appalling thing I have ever seen

“I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. So choose life in order that you may live, you and your descendants” Deuteronomy 30:19

If this is a hoax I’m not sure how less horrific this is. If this is reality it is probably the saddest and most appalling thing I’ve ever read. Pete and Alisha Arnold, both 30, living in Minneapolis, MN, have created a web site (which I will not link to as not to give them more web traffic) in which they are asking the public to vote on whether or not they should have an abortion.

You read that correctly.

According to the bio on their site, she works for a small software company and he for an IT consulting business. They married at age 21 after an unplanned pregnancy the previous year ended “unsuccessfully.” The bio makes mentions of their first house, their second house, their first cat, and their second cat, before mentioning that two planned pregnancies this year ended in miscarriages.

Now, just a few months later and pregnant again, it would seem their desire for attention has overcome their desire for a child (whether this is a hoax or not), because if it’s real they are literally putting the life of another human being in the mouse-clicks of the masses.

As quoted on the Daily Mail’s (London) web site, Mary Spaulding Balch, director of state legislation for National Right to Life, astutely observed: “This is shocking. The first thing that came to my mind when I heard of this was the Roman Colosseum when the mob picked who lived and who died.”

What is most shocking is the abject indifference for human life that permeates the hearts and minds of people who would even consider such a thing, publicity stunt or not. It is surely evidence of the total depravity of man and our need for the saving work of Jesus Christ, who brought into being everything that has come into being, including all life (John 1:3). An idea and a web site such as this are surely evidence of God giving those who have suppressed the truth in unrighteous over to their depraved minds. Consider Romans 1:28-32:

And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper,  29 being filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, evil; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malice; they are gossips,  30 slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents,  31 without understanding, untrustworthy, unloving, unmerciful;  32 and although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them.

It strikes me what these people are doing is marked by unrighteousness, wickedness, greed (they have sold ads on their web page), evil, murder, deceit (if this is a hoax), an obvious hatred of God as He has revealed Himself, arrogance, boastfulness, invention of evil (who has ever heard of such a thing as this?), a lack of understanding, a lack of love for their child, and a lack of mercy. Judging by comments on their site they are surely aware of the ordinance of God and that those who practice such things as they are engaging in are worthy of death (as we all are as sinners). And what is sad that as of the time of the web page story I referenced, over half were voting for abortion (that has since changed as the story has become more public), so there are those who are giving hearty approval to the practice of Pete and Alisha Arnold.

I pray that this is a hoax, for at least then there is not the life of an innocent, unborn child hanging by the thread of a web poll. But beyond that I pray that God, who is rich in mercy, might by His own grace and for His own glory do a saving work in this situation, because it sure seems like those who would even consider this heinous idea are beyond the pale of repentance. With God all things are possible.

Come quickly, Lord Jesus!
